You can still receive child benefit after your 18th birthday, e.g. during vocational training, studies, FSJ, military service or transition periods. The entitlement generally applies until age 25.

During vocational training, studies or FSJ, you must be properly health insured. Students are usually covered by family insurance until age 25, after which student health insurance applies.

For studies or school-based training, you may be entitled to BAföG. The application should be submitted early, as processing can take several months.

When moving for training, studies or military service, you must re-register. Employers, universities or authorities must also be informed.

Depending on the type of service, different social insurance and registration regulations apply. These periods may also be relevant for pension or waiting periods.

For Work & Travel, you need to complete important organizational steps, such as visa, health insurance, international health insurance and possibly deregistration in Germany. Different rules apply depending on the destination country.
